Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Drivers familiar with the Corolla sedan will find themselves at home inside the Corolla Cross. The dashboard layout, interior materials, and convenience features are nearly identical to the four-door model’s. However, the Corolla Cross’s larger dimensions create more room for passengers–particularly in the back seat–and additional space for cargo. Lower trims are far more basic, but the XLE model comes with nice-looking faux-leather upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a flip-down center armrest for rear-seat passengers.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

All nonhybrid Corolla Cross models will come with a 169-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission; front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available as an option. During that first test we complained that acceleration was lazy and that the engine sounded buzzy, particularly at high revs. At our test track, our all-wheel drive test vehicle delivered a 9.2-second 60-mph time. Sloths move quicker. The hybrid powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and three electric motors; all-wheel drive is standard on the hybrid and the powertrain makes a combined 194 horsepower. We haven’t test driven the hybrid model yet but we’re hoping it delivers both more refinement and quicker acceleration. The Corolla Cross’s ride is agreeable enough though, so buyers seeking comfort will be satisfied either way.

What’s the Toyota Corolla Cross fuel economy?

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross uses regular 87-octane unleaded fuel and has a number of different fuel economy ratings depending on which powertrain you get:

The front-wheel-drive Corolla Cross gets an EPA-estimated 31/33/32 mpg city/highway/combined.

The all-wheel-drive option does slightly worse, making 29/32/30 city/highway/combined.

A hybrid drivetrain option is coming for 2023.

Is the Toyota Corolla Cross self-driving?

No, but it does come with Toyota’s full safety suite, including a standard blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert on LE and XLE trims, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking on XLE. That last feature will automatically apply the brakes if you’re about to back into something.

Toyota includes a lot of other safety features as standard across all vehicles, including full-speed radar cruise control and automatic high beams. Those are both nice quality-of-life improvements for the driver.

LE

  • keyless entry
  • Roof rails
  • Push-button start
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Automatic climate control
  • Heated side mirrors
  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Three USB ports
  • A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross comes with a decent amount of safety features

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross comes with Toyota Safety Sense. This is a set of important safety features including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning. Toyota Safety Sense also has lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control.

Edmunds also expects that the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross will have satellite radio and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, like the Corolla Sedan. Higher trim levels may come with heated front seats, a sunroof, and simulated leather upholstery.

If you love the Toyota Corolla but also want an SUV, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross may be just what you’re looking for. With its suite of safety systems, compact but comfortable design, and essential technology, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross looks to be a great small SUV.
