Ford Maverick Gets Custom Slide-In Camper, Lift For Overland Makeover

What Is the Ford Maverick?

The Maverick is Ford’s new small pickup truck. Some folks may remember a compact car with the same name in the 1970s, but this is a different animal entirely.

The recently unveiled 2022 Ford Maverick has a hybrid powertrain and a starting price of $19,995. It has a short bed that’s only 4.5 feet, but it’s long on legroom. It can comfortably seat three backseat passengers. It’s tempting to think of the Maverick as a downsized Ranger or F-150.

In some ways, however, it’s more like a cargo-carrying Ford Escape.

The low-profile, unibody truck comes in three different trims, the XL, the XLT, and the Lariat. The standard trucks are FWD with a 2.5L, four-cylinder engine combined with a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

You can upgrade to a turbocharged 2.0L engine that provides 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The Maverick boasts up to 40 mpg in the city and 500 miles on a tank of gas.

Trims and Options

The 2022 Ford Maverick will be available as an XL, XLT, or Lariat.  The FX4 package will add all-wheel drive, underbody protection, and additional off-road tuned drive modes to the XLT and Lariat trims.

Unfortunately, the sheer weight of those trims and options will quickly drain the scant 1,500-pound payload.  That’s why many dealer stock Ford F-150s have payloads around 1,500-pounds.  If you’re thinking of matching the 2022 Maverick with a camper, your best bet is a base XL.  You’ll likely need every bit of that 1,500-pound allowance.

Can You Use a Truck Bed Tent with the Maverick?

If you want to go even more minimal, a tent camper is another option. Tent camps are tents that secure inside the truck bed. They shelter you from the elements and let you sleep on a flat, level surface that’s off the ground.

On the positive side, they’re extremely economical and allow you to get into more remote places.

They have their disadvantages, too. There’s no bathroom or kitchen, and you have to take them down before you drive off from the campsite.

Like everything else, trucks are quickly turning into computers (if not robots) and the 2022 Maverick is no exception.  The standard Ford Co-Pilot360 system offers pre-collision assist, automatic emergency braking and automatic high-beam headlamps.  Optional driver-assist technology includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go and blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert.  It doesn’t drive itself, but it wants to.

The cabin features a standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for our smartphone overlords.  The Maverick also offers WIFI for up to 10 devices and integration with the FordPass app to find your truck, check your fuel level, lock and unlock your doors, and start your truck – all from your phone.  Just don’t leave the app open and let little Johnny play with your phone.

The Ford Maverick promises to be a cool little adventure vehicle when it comes out in 2022. When it is equipped with the 4K Tow Package it will be able tow a variety of small travel trailers and pop-ups.

Is the Maverick good for camping?

As a compact truck, the Ford Maverick is a decent adventuring vehicle. While the hybrid engine only offers front-wheel drive (for now,) the turbocharged engine has optional all-wheel drive. With the more potent powerplant, you can enjoy added horsepower and the benefits of AWD. And those will both certainly come in handy while doing something like camping.

Another perk of this pickup is the available FX4 Off-Road package. This package is only offered to the XLT and Lariat trims, and you must have the EcoBoost engine with AWD. But, it does deliver on some helpful things when taking the road less traveled. These include things like improved cooling capabilities and an off-road suspension.

While the Maverick won’t be as capable as something like a Jeep Wrangler, you won’t be making the same on-road compromises that you do with a dedicated off-roader. Even better is the cost of this small truck. The base model starts at around $20,000, which means you don’t have to break the bank in order to get a new pickup. But, if you want to buy the Maverick today, you’ll probably have a difficult time.
