Cardpool: Selling your gift card

  • Option to be paid by check or Amazon gift card
  • Good rates, but not the best

Like all gift card exchanges, you get a payout that is less than the full value of the cards you sell. Cardpool promises up to 92%. This will vary depending on the supply and demand of that particular card.

Selling your card is easy if you follow the links on the website. Once you’ve entered the gift card information, Cardpool claims you’ll see your payout instantly. This works for both physical and electronic gift cards, but if you’re selling a physical one online you won’t need to send it in; Cardpool only needs the electronic information. If you sell in store you can walk out with cash or a new gift card that same day.

As with all of our card exchange reviews, we asked for a quote on a $20 Walmart gift card. Cardpool offered us a $16 check; one of the better offers we had. Cardpool also has the option to be paid in Amazon gift cards. We’d recommend this because you’re likely to get about 6 percent more for the value of the gift card you’re selling compared to a check. We liked this option as there’s not much you can’t find on Amazon these days, and could have sold our $20 Walmart card for just shy of $17. That said, this varies by day and by type of card you’re selling, so you would probably see different numbers if you used the website today.

If you select the paper check option, it will take 5-10 business days to receive it in the mail (and some have complained that theirs never arrived). The Amazon gift card, on the other hand, will be emailed to you more quickly. The list of gift cards Cardpool will buy is vast and includes a ton of common retailers including Macy’s, Starbucks, Ulta, Torrid, Safeway and Walgreens.

How Much Can You Make?

Say you have a $25 gift card to a store that you do not like or a restaurant that does not have any locations near you.

Instead of letting it sit in your wallet, you can sell it to

How much you receive for it varies, but their site claims you can get up to 95% cash back.

Customer Service

This seems to be a severe area of lacking.  They have been around for 15 years, and people are still having to contact the BBB to get a response when there was a problem.

They are so responsive to BBB complaints that it doesn’t appear that they are complacent, but if they would respond to the customer service request before they made it to the BBB, they would have far fewer complaint’s.

The argument could be made that perhaps those complaining did not contact customer service first, and that is possible, but there were a lot of complaints that included something about trying customer service and getting no response.

Also, they do not have a customer service phone number. When you click on the contact link, you are only asked which email program you would like to open it with.

That also makes it difficult if your email program is not listed, since there is no email address listed here for you to enter it manually.

At, there were discounts as high as 35% off for a House of Hoops gift card from Foot Locker. Raise might have the broadest selection, with discounted gift cards from nearly 1,000 name-brand merchants. Like, some gift cards at are only available as eGift cards, which means you can only use them for online purchases. The site also sells physical gift cards and printable vouchers. To get a physical gift card by mail, shipping is free.

Unlike the other gift card sites described in this article, Raise lets sellers choose their discount.

At the time of writing, there were hundreds of Target gift cards available, from about $20 to $300, with discounts up to 0.5%. For Lowe's, there were hundreds of gift cards available ranging in value from $25 to $500, with discounts up to 4.2%.As with other sites, only a couple of gift cards were available for certain retailers. Some retailers’ gift cards were in abundant supply.

Other Considerations

Studies have shown that people spend gift card balances more freely than they spend cash. Some people have the self-control to spend gift cards like cash, but others will spend more than they would have otherwise.

Another problem arises if you want to return something you purchase with a gift card. Instead of getting real money back as you would if you made the purchase with a credit or debit card or with cash, you’ll usually get your refund in the form of a gift card.

You also have to consider the value of your time. A 5% discount at Starbucks sounds great, but when that means getting a $15 gift card for $14.25, you have to ask yourself if it’s worth the trouble just to save 75 cents. At larger denominations, your dollar savings become more significant, but even if you buy a $100 gift card with a 5% discount, you’re only saving $5.

Selling gift cards on eBay

If you’re thinking about selling your gift card on

If you’re thinking about selling your gift card on eBay, think again. It’s quite possibly the worse place to sell your gift card. On eBay you’ll only get 80–90% of the face value of your gift card, plus you’ll pay seller’s fees on top of that.

For example, if you have a $100 iTunes gift card, your top bid might be $80.00. You’ll pay 8% for the eBay listing fees. Plus if you get paid by PayPal they’ll take 2.9% as well. Suddenly your $100 gift card is worth $70 to you. No thanks.

Stick with the sites listed above to sell your gift cards for cash, and you’ll get more of the face value. Plus you get instant cash and don’t have to deal with bidders and auctions. You save time and get more money.
