There’s never a day I regret dedicating myself to blogging. Never.

It’s not just because of the money, either. It’s because I also get to do what I love and help people at the same time.

It’s also a great way to earn some extra cash while also providing a valuable service. Darren Rowse from ProBlogger runs a hugely popular job board where he charges $70 for a 30-day listing. Now that you’ve selected your niche, it’s time to start creating content. As you begin, keep in mind that the strategy behind your articles is just as important as the writing itself. Your articles, of course, will involve a lot of writing – but they’ll also involve a great deal of research and planning.

On top of that, you’ll want to upload new content consistently and frequently without compromising on quality. Here’s what you should know as you start creating and scaling your content:

Choose the right topics

Just as you selected a strategic blog niche, you’ll also want to choose strategic topics to write about. The best topics must accomplish two things:

  • They address the needs of your target audience and offer them a thoughtful, actionable solution.

  • They target keywords with high search volumes – a number that indicates how many people are looking up a given word or topic during a selected time frame (typically one month). The idea here is that the higher the keyword volume, the more interested people are in that topic. When your articles provide a thorough answer to people’s search queries, the more likely it is to rank on search engines – which, in turn, will bring people to your site (more on that later in Step 4).

Writing headlines is also an important step you don't want to forget. Be sure to accompany all of your blog topics with catchy titles. The catchier your blog titles, the more likely it is that people will click to read the content.

Post consistently

To reach your initial goal to get more site visitors, you’ll need to post fresh content frequently. Aim to publish a minimum of 3 to 4 new posts per week so that you maximize organic traffic.

On top of that, you’ll want to publish regularly. Don’t release a huge batch of articles one week, only to publish nothing the following week. Instead, create an editorial calendar and plan a consistent publishing schedule ahead of time. This will signify to Google that you run a healthy, active blog.

Distribute the workload

As you consider how to make money blogging, remember that you’re not only building your online presence; you’re also sharpening your entrepreneurial skills. You’ll soon realize that creating upwards of 3 posts per week is a lot to handle alongside business management.

3. Blog Advertisements

Displaying advertisement space is arguably the easiest, most basic (and quickest) ways to make money.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying basic in a bad way. I mean that simple advertising space is the core component when you’re first just starting out—and it’s the first channel I personally pursued. But because it’s so comparatively easy to do, it also tends to pay the least amount in financial return.

For context, this simple blog advertisement (pictured below) on my blog here generates anywhere from $800 to $1,200 per month in blog income based on around 300,000 monthly readers.

The trade off however, is that it takes me zero effort on a daily basis to generate revenue with this channel since I’m an approved publisher with the ad platform Carbon Ads, that goes out and brokers deals with advertisers like Atlassian, Adobe, Slack, and hundreds of other tech-related tool companies that want to reach my audience.

Next on how to make money, blogging is consulting—and this is pretty simple if there’s a specific skill you have. For instance, I’m in the online business and internet marketing blogging niche.

When I started the website, I had my digital marketing skills, so I opted to offer consulting services. For me, it was pretty easy because my former employer wanted me to freelance for three months as they transitioned to a new employee.

The point here is that if you have a profitable blog on a specific marketable topic/subject, you can offer yourself as a consultant for different businesses. Landing clients is the hardest part, but if your content on your blog is attracting the right people, it can be done.

How to Start Consulting

1. Ask your current or most recent employer 

Your current or most recent employer is a great way to start. For example, if you want to leave your job and get into blogging full-time and have a certain skill your employer needs, you can put in your two weeks and explain that you’d love to continue as a consultant if they have you.

Some employers won’t be receptive to this, but some will be. It all depends on the company’s culture and how your boss feels about your work.

2. Choose a specialty 

When you’re doing consulting, you need to pick a specialty to help you make money blogging from your expertise. This is usually related to what you do professionally, but it doesn’t always have to be.

For example, let’s say you’ve been an accountant for seven years but have a passion for health and nutrition. Your specialty could be online personal training.

Even though you may not be as credentialed in that as you are in accounting, as long as you’ve studied the subject, you’ll know more than most people.

But frankly, the easiest way to have quick success is to choose something related to the job you have. Wherever you’re employed, there will be skills you have that are sought after, so select a blog topic that you already understand that will engage your site visitors.

For social media, you can put it on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, or wherever else you have a presence. For your blog, you can put your consulting service offer in the navigation or even have it on your blog’s homepage.

Make it clear that you offer to consult and create content your ideal customer wants to read.

Editors Note Most people neglect them as resources, but don’t be scared to look on Craigslist and Fiverr for someone who might be interested in your services. It’s a great way to land your first few clients!

5. Gather leads and choose the best fit

Once you have a blog up and have spent time creating content, you will start getting people contacting you looking for services and enquiring about making money. From here, you need to gather those leads and determine who is the best fit for you as a consultant.

This isn’t easy to determine at the start, so begin by landing your first few clients to see what you like/dislike about them and the whole aspect of working with others.

6. Do your best work

Make sure that whenever you have a new client, you do your best to make them happy. This should go without saying, but it’s really important because word of mouth will grow your consulting opportunities. They’re much more likely to refer you to other people if you do a great job. 

8) Sell Subscriptions to Premium Content

If the content you create is valuable to your audience, they may be willing to pay or subscribe for access to it. That said, there are multiple great paywall solutions that will help you get started.

A paywall is usually popular on news sites but is getting increasingly more popular with any kind of content sites.  It’s software that shows a preview of your content but prevents the reader from seeing it fully without first paying and/or subscribing to your platform.  

This is like having a membership site, but it’s much simpler for you and your subscribers as it takes a lot less effort for your visitors to pay for the content, which equates to more revenue and higher conversion. 

So, if you are writing about niche topics, run a small news publication, have a premium podcast, or any other valuable content on your site, a paywall might be the best monetization method for you:

  1. You get full control of your income and don’t have to rely on 3rd parties, like ad networks. 
  1. You can stick to what you already do well – creating high quality content.
  2. You get to know your readers as you can collect subscribers’ emails and get in touch with them for feedback, upselling, etc.

This involves adding affiliate links to various products or services within your posts, throughout your site, or across your social media accounts. When your site visitors click on those links and make a purchase, you’ll earn a commission from the sale.

One of the most popular digital product marketplaces is You can search the Clickbank marketplace for products related to your marketplace and promote them on your website, write product reviews, etc.

Just like with Amazon, if someone clicks on the link and goes back and buys the product you are promoting, you would get a commission for a percentage of the sale.

One attractive feature of promoting digital information products is that the commissions tend to be higher than that of physical products; ranging anywhere from 10 percent to 50 percent or even higher. As an example, if someone is selling a digital information product for $500 with a 50 percent commission, you can earn $250 per sale. That said, I’d also like to emphasize the importance of advertising only those products or services that you’ve used yourself or genuinely believe can help your audience.

The potential for blogging is virtually unlimited. Well-established bloggers like Ryan Robinson—who runs a blog about blogging—can make upward of $30,000 per month. Adam Enfroy, who started blogging about the business of blogging in 2019 as a side hustle, generated $1.5 million from his blog just two years later.

It’s not just monthly revenue that bloggers can cash in on. Marketplaces like Flippa list blogs for sale, many of which come with hefty six-figure price tags. Bloggers cash in when their creativity project is acquired. 

Unfortunately, not every blogger can make millions

Unfortunately, not every blogger can make millions through their website. The income potential of your blog depends on two factors:

  • Your niche. Do people spend large sums of money on products in your industry? The software industry, for example, can be lucrative, since many companies pay recurring commission. Bloggers can earn small amounts each month, long after the customer made the purchase. (More on this later.) 
  • Your monetization strategies. Some blog monetization methods are off the table for new bloggers who want to stick to their core values—like not being paid to post content you don’t agree with. This can impact earning potential in the short term. 

How to increase your blog traffic

Once you’ve created your website, come up with a kick-ass blog topic and you’ve published your first posts, the big question is – where are all the readers?

You can’t just expect people to magically find your blog and start reading it. You have to promote it!

Here are the best and easiest ways to get more readers for your blog:

    As with any business nowadays, you’re not likely to get noticed if you don’t have social media accounts.

    We recommend setting up pages/accounts for your blog on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and even LinkedIn (you’re essentially your own business anyway, right?). Design these accounts in a similar colour scheme/theme to your blog so your brand is consistent and easily recognisable.

    Use them to share new posts and tag fellow bloggers/influencers/companies who might share your content and help it to reach an even bigger audience.

    You could also dabble in some paid advertising to help your blog reach a wider audience, or run a competition to generate more likes. Once you’ve got the followers, keep them interested by posting on a regular basis (not just for new blog posts).

  2. Connect with other bloggers

    Make yourself known to other people who blog about similar topics. Despite the fact you’re technically a competitor, you’re likely to be pleasantly surprised by how supportive the blogger community can be.

    Many bloggers even have a ‘links’ page on their site which they use to link to loads of their friends within the community in return for a link on your own blog. This will help massively with your SEO (that’s search engine optimisation – how likely your blog is to pop up in Google searches).

    If you engage with other bloggers and share their content, they’ll likely return the favour. You could even work on some collaborations!

  3. Respond to news stories on your blog

    If something happens in the news which is related to your niche, get involved. This is what we refer to as ‘newsjacking‘ and it can work a treat for getting you some great exposure.

    For example, if you blog about cheap student cooking, keep an eye out for things like the reveal of our latest Student Money Survey. Students might spend an average of £101 a month on groceries, but you can tell them how to spend less (while eating better food!).

    You can get on social media to say your bit with relevant hashtags, get involved in discussions and even reach out to journalists to say you’re available for comment.

    If you’re really great at owning your niche, journalists might even come to you.

  4. Create viral content

    Creating viral content will help you reach a new market and, in turn, increase your readership.

    This might be easier said than done, but the key to creating viral content is to tap into controversial or highly-discussed topics related to your niche blogging field. As you can imagine, this often involves newsjacking, as mentioned above.

    As this is your niche, you’ll be passionate, opinionated and knowledgable about it, so you’ll be able to post an opinion that people want to read, share and talk about.


Blogging for money is not a theoretical concept. Thousands of bloggers are making money through their blogs either by selling ad space, their own products/services, or through affiliate marketing.

All these successful bloggers have some things in common:

  • They are having blogs with great content.
  • They have managed to build communities around their blogs.
  • They use more than one way to make money. They have their own products but they also make money from affiliate marketing and selling ad space.
  • They have been blogging for years and it took them a number of years to get to the point of making a living from their blogs.

It’s not an easy job and it’s not something that will generate results in a few months or even years, it will take time and it needs a LOT of patience. BUT, as I mentioned above, once it happens it’s one of the best jobs in the World!

Google AdSense might be the fastest and easiest way for a beginner to start earning passive income with a blog. The basic idea behind AdSense is that you can display Google Ads on your website and when a visitor clicks on those ads you get a percentage of the ad costs. You’ve certainly seen ads on other people’s websites; you can have these ads appear on your blog or website as well.

AdSense is a contextual advertising network that places partner (business) ads on your website. It’s easy to set up—all you have to do is copy and paste some code given to you from Google in the places you'd like the ads to appear on your website. Google will then show ads from advertisers that are a match to the content on your website so that ideally your website visitors see relevant ads.

Don’t worry that your blog niche won’t be able to draw quality ads to your site. Google AdSense is one of the biggest networks on the Web, so you should get a healthy enough list of clickable sites to attract your readership.

And Google is smart enough to only show ads on your website that are relevant to the content on your website, so in many cases, this can enhance the user experience on your site, and the ads can be helpful.

Just make sure your content is of the highest quality!

Though Adsense is a popular option, I think that affiliate information marketing is also an excellent way to make virtually passive income online.
