How to Make Money Selling eBooks ($600+ per Month)

How much money can you make from eBooks?

Producing an eBook can be ridiculously cheap and, often, completely free, and selling your own ebook can net you anything from several pounds a day to almost nothing.

The good news is that you get lots of say in your potential earnings, so it’s worth taking a look at the sums:

  • eBooks sell for anywhere between 99p to £8.99 and up, but the store (and your publishing platform) will take a chunk of each sale
  • You can sell your book for whatever price you like – and you can alter the price to test different tactics – but the ideal price depends on your book’s length, reviews and competition
  • If you’ve got cash to invest (or can crowdfund to pay for it), you could spend money on extra marketing for your book to increase its chances of success, but there are lots of ways to market it for free, like on social media.

Here’s how to maximise your eBook profits…

Ghostwriting 101: What You Need to Know

I have personally hired many professionals from Fiverr, and they have done an amazing job.

You can find a professional for almost any work on Fiverr and at an affordable rate. Try to sort them out by ratings and reviews.

People might have a bad impression of you if they notice grammatical and sentence formation mistakes on your eBook.

So it is highly essential to hire a professional ebook editor.

If you are on a tight budget, you can proofread your ebook with the help of Grammarly, which helps you find all sorts of grammatical errors.

Editing the ebook is a complicated part, so hire some professionals you think might be the best to work on your eBook.

4. Write a Series

Nothing is easier to sell than a sequel to a previous ebook. I’ve done a series of four Freelance Writers Den ebooks adapted from bootcamps, and the new Small Blog, Big Income ebook is the sequel to the original Small Blog, Big Income: A Niche Blogger’s 7-Step Success Formula.

Know what I did to sell the new one? I sent an email to everyone who bought the first one, and made hundreds of sales. Easy!

Creating an Audiobook format would positively impact your sales to make money selling ebooks.

You can hire a highly skilled voice-over artist at an affordable rate from Fiverr.

The voice that would read the content from your ebook is crucial because it would positively decide a reader’s perception of purchasing it.

Never even have a second thought about whether you want to narrate your ebook.

Only a professional voice-over artist knows how to make it sound so perfectly that you or I cannot do it.

It is always smart to have 3 formats: Print version, Ebook version, and Audiobook version when you want to publish your book.

People are more comfortable with the Audiobook version because it creates a different experience that readers love.

5. Sell Products or Services

If someone has invested the time to read your entire book, they’ll likely want to learn even more from you. The back of your book is the perfect place to let readers know about any other books, products, or services you sell.

Many nonfiction authors earn more money from selling products and services to readers than they do from royalties.

How to Write an eBook and Make Money the Easy Way

Publishing an ebook on Kindle is one of the most challenging things I've ever done, but it was 100% worth it.

The step-by-step guide I outlined is exactly what I did to sell my book. It's also the same advice that Chandler Bolt has talked about with us.

He's also gone one step further to help make it even easier for you to design your ebook and start selling. Book Bolt is the software that Chandler developed to help you create an ebook. If you want to sell your ebook and make sure it looks really professional I definitely recommend you give it a try.

More than that, however, we talked about the key to a successful ebook being research. Well, Book Bolt make that whole process even easier. The software helps you check out other ebooks in your niche and determine what the best ebooks are for your own book.

If you didn't like Book Bolt (I don't believe you) then you can always check out these Book Bolt alternatives too!

9. Quick and Easy Search Engine Rankings

Getting your website to rank #1 in Google for a competitive keyword is tough, but it’s ridiculously easy for Amazon to get ranked #1 in Google.

You can get your book’s page on Amazon ranked very highly in Google, even for really competitive search terms, if you have a book that readers love.

Step 6: Designing the Cover

Unless you’re a VERY creative person, I’d look to outsource this part.

You know the old adage, “never judge a book by its cover.”  Well, that’s not the case on Amazon.

EVERY book is judged by its cover.

You want to make sure yours looks professional and stands out from the crowd.

A quality cover makes your ebook look professional.  It shows you mean business and the content inside is of a high quality.

For great design covers, there are a few places you can look to:

99designs:  This is the high priced option.  A book cover will typically run you between $50 and $500.  I know, it’s a big spread.

With 99designs you’ll run a contest.  You’ll write up a description of what you’re looking for and then people will submit their designs.

You put a price up front on how much you’re willing to pay for the design.  The higher the price, the more design submissions you’re going to get.

Freelancer:  A book cover here will probably be le

Freelancer:  A book cover here will probably be less than $50.  With Freelancer, you hire a freelancer to do the design work.

Unlike 99designs, you pick one designer and pay them to do the work.  So before you pick one, make sure to look at some of their samples to make sure it’s on par with what you’re looking for.

Usually, you contract someone out at an hourly rate, but you can also set a price for the full project.

Fiverr:  The cheapest option.  Get an ebook cover

Fiverr:  The cheapest option.  Get an ebook cover designed for $5.  Everything on Fiverr is only $5.  While you may be thinking it’s impossible to get a good design for that much, but you’d be wrong.

Some of the people on Fiverr are trained individuals getting started.  They’re making very little money to build a portfolio and get their name out there.

Conclusion

Writing an ebook seems daunting, but all the barriers are gone.

No one is telling you how long it needs to be, what you need to write about, or even what the title should be.

All you need is the desire and discipline to do it.

Our American expats took the research they already did and turned it into a nice little monthly passive income.

There is something you have knowledge on which can turn into a few thousand words that someone is willing to pay for.

Happy writing!

How To Write An Ebook and Make Money

The golden rule to writing an ebook is to research your ebook topic before you put together anything.

This is true no matter what kind of ebooks you want to create. If you want to sell your ebooks you have to know if there is a market for them.

When you're getting ready to become an ebook author and write your own ebook, it's important to plan first. Whether you're interested in writing fiction or non fiction, to come up with a best selling ebook idea you need to decide on a niche.

There are various ways to go about this but whatever your approach you need to be prepared to put a certain amount of time into planning.

Some Dos and Don’ts for a Successful Ebook

Making money from ebooks isn’t automatic. You can’t just put anything in it and hope to profit. It’s not a difficult task, but you should follow some best practices to make sure your ebook draws attention from readers and generates sales.

Don’t Get Overwhelmed

Just because you’re writing a book doesn’t mean you have to stress out. With a plan in place, you can finish your work and put it on sale.

You just need to create an outline for the book to follow, set a schedule for when you’re going to write (if it’s original work) or when you’re going to work on it, how you will market the book and when each task needs to be done, and set a goal publication date when it will be offered on sale. It’s a matter of setting aside time each day. You can’t just work on this when you “feel” like it… otherwise, it’ll never get done.

Do Choose a Topic You Know About

You want to write with authority and confidence… and passion. It’s not a good idea to pick a topic just because you think it might be a best-seller. Remember, you can always outsource the writing to an expert as well.

Don’t Make Your Writing Flowery and Complicated

Make sure all your text is easy to read and understand. It's better to write in a conversational manner and not in an academic manner. Many experts suggest that you should write at an eight-grade writing level.

Don’t Forget About Proofreading

Double check for grammatical errors, misspellings, etc. Make sure you have a trusted friend or even professional proofreader go over your ebook before publication. There’s nothing worse than releasing a book full of errors — it doesn’t inspire confidence in your readers, can lead to refunds, and bad reviews.

Do Create a Professional Layout and Cover

Just because you are self-publishing doesn’t mean you want it to like an amateur did it. Hire a graphic designer on a site like Fiverr.com to create a good-looking cover based on your direction and input for not much money. They can also lay out the interior pages too. Just because your book is self-published doesn't mean it has to look and feel that way.

Starting an Ebook Business — Where You Sell

As an ebook publisher, you have a few options available for selling your works.

You can set up your own website and sell your ebook directly online. You might make a PDF available to your readers for example. A simple shopping cart or PayPal link and you’re all set. A reader visits your site, they order, and they get a download link and get your book. It’s pretty much all automated, and you simply keep an eye on things to make sure the site is running smoothly.

The benefit of this is you control the entire process, get all of the customer information (so you can promote additional products, services, or books), and you can charge higher prices.

One of the easiest ways to sell ebooks is to work through a third-party site like Amazon. You may have ordered products, even books, from Amazon in the past. But this is a whole different side to this massive e-commerce site.

The big benefit to working through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, even though they charge you a commission on your sales, is their reach. Around one fifth of Americans (21%) are said to be active ebook readers in the last year. That’s your potential audience, all those people visiting this site and browsing for a new book. It could be your book they find when doing a search on a related keyword.

While you may not make as much money as you would selling directly on your own site, you'll have the opportunity to reach an audience who you wouldn't otherwise have access to.

The process of selling your ebook on Kindle is straightforward. You sign up, then upload your ebook. They take care of converting it to their proprietary format. Then you’re ready to sell and grow your business through Amazon.com.

Which of these options should you go with? I recommend doing both.

Put one (or two) of your books on Amazon and think of that as a traffic source… a way for new people to find you; and you get to make profits from the sales of the ebook. Use your Amazon ebooks to drive people back to your website and get them onto your email list.

The best way to do this is to include a free bonus offer inside your book and have them go back to your website to claim their bonus. In order to get access to the bonus, they have to opt-in and give you their email address.

Once you have them on your email list you can follow up with them and sell them additional ebooks from your own site, at a higher price point. Use the best of both worlds!

What Is An eBook and How Does it Work?

An eBook is a book in digital form, versus a physical book that is available in either hardback or paperback. With the latter, you can pick it up, hold it as you’re reading and turn the pages, and then set it on a shelf when you’re done.

Conversely, you read an eBook, which is 100% digital, on an electronic device like a smartphone, tablet, computer, etc.

Because eBooks won’t take up space on your shelf, it’s easy to take thousands of them with you wherever you go. They are also a lot cheaper than physical books!

There is More to Selling eBooks Than Just Writing Them

It’s easier than you probably think to make money writing eBooks. All you need to do is craft your publishing plan and put it into action.

A lot goes into creating your first eBook – more than just putting your thoughts into book form and selling it.

As you work on your project, you will also be building an audience along the way. Your readers will give your eBook life. They will also provide you with inspiration, share their feedback, ask questions, and ultimately help you grow your income.

Aside from your target audience, harness the power of networking. It’s important to connect with other content creators like yourself. Building a network of peers and becoming known within the creator community come with so many benefits, including:

  • Making friends
